Langston Hughes was initially influenced and had different perspectives of male and female characters. Therefore, he has interpreted both of them into his texts. The men and women take roles and have characteristics in their stories. In addition, Langston Hughes short stories are about the roles that men and woman characters take their place in. One way to interpret the female characters is that they have experienced more in life. For example, in the Langston Hughes, A short biography, his grandmother has gone through a lot in life. Langston Hughes portrays the male characters in his story a bit ignorant. In Hughes short story Thank You Ma’am, Roger, had the character of someone who wasn 't fully educated and informed about what is good and bad. No one was really at home to teach him all these things and how to be respectful and take care of himself. Roger doesn 't really know how to properly take care of himself and do the right thing. Roger snatched Mrs. Jones purse and thought he can get away with it because he has a habit of stealing and running away. Following this, soon Mrs. Jones came in and showed him how to take care of himself by having him wash his face and explain that there are more appropriate ways of getting what you want by not stealing. Mrs. Jones said that instead of stealing, Roger could 've asked for money.Though, she also states that sometimes you can 't get what you always want even though you badly want that item. In Mother to son, the son is learning from the mom. The mom is explaining about life. She is stating what happens in life. The son is learning that when he is going through life, it won 't always be manageable. His mother is telling him that he can 't step down and give up because that will take him nowhere.
