The leaves begin to change to vibrant shades of reds, oranges and yellows, slowly falling down onto the dry, cracked ground. As I walk up the driveway to my grandparents house I hear the crunch of the leaves under my shoes, just as I go to open the door I hear something quickly scurry away from behind me. I catch a glimpse of a tiny chipmunk running away with an acorn, he must be hurrying home to his family for dinner just as I. Before I step inside I take a second; I look around and everything seems so simple. Everyday life is so chaotic, but Thanksgiving is that time once a year where you can just relax. It’s a time full of happiness and laughter, a designated day to give thanks, to sit down and truly realize how lucky you are. It’s crazy how one person can realize all of this in one quick encounter with a innocent chipmunk. As I walk through the door my jaw drops; honey glazed ham cooking in the oven, freshly baked bread being sliced, potatoes bowling on the stove, steaming hot stuffing sitting on the counter, gooey marshmallows melted on top of sweet potatoes, creamy green bean casserole, and lastly but by far my favorite, slimy jello pumpkins. It was like walking into heaven. Of course, my little day dream didn’t last long. I was soon trampled by my cousins, and oh so lucky I was to receive tons of sticky hugs. Everyone gathered around one table, sharing and creating memories, it may not have seemed like a big deal but in reality it was. It’s times like these that we’ll all be able to look back on and laugh, it’s a time to remember on a bad day when you need something to look forward to.
