Have you ever been so close to a friend that you think of them as your brother or sister? In the book, That Was Then, This Is Now, written by S.E. Hinton, two friends, Bryon and Mark, who are as close as brothers, end up growing apart from each other because Bryon is growing up and maturing where Mark is still living in the moment and wants to stay a kid. They continue to separate when Bryon gets a new girlfriend who widens the gorge between the two “brothers”. Then Bryon finds something shocking that disconnects the two boys forever. Throughout the novel, the reader can see that Bryon and Mark had many differences, but they also had a few similarities. To begin, there are clear differences between Bryon and Mark. On the contrary, it is clear that Bryon is changing throughout the novel; he even says it himself when he was talking, in chapter four, about things that he did as a kid and how he is maturing and not doing anything he used to do. Furthermore, another difference is that Mark doesn’t know right from wrong, but Bryon is fully aware of what is right and wrong. For example, at the end of the novel when Bryon finds the drugs that Mark was selling, Bryon shows that he knows that selling drugs is illegal and bad so he calls the cops on Mark. Mark, on the other hand, thought that he was doing a good thing for Bryon and his mom by bringing in money and thought that there was no harm in selling drugs because he is not forcing people to take drugs, and he thinks that people would get drugs even if he didn’t
