The True Outsiders Do you know what it’s like to be an outsider? The novel “The Outsiders” written by Susan Eloise Hinton in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 1960’s is about two social groups. The first social groups were the Socs, they were the rich and privileged kids. The second groups were the greasers, they were poor and treated as the outcast.
“The Outsiders”, is a tragic yet inspiring and touching book. Some of the main characters in the book are Ponyboy, Johnny, Dally, Darry, Sodapop, and Two-Bit. The main idea of the book is mostly about grouping by how much money they have. Two groups, the Socs and the Greasers, are different, but in a way also not different. Greasers are some kids who are not that smart, don’t have much money and live in poor homes.
In the merit-worthy novel The Outsiders, society proves to be a challenging concept to understand as two gangs live in hatred of one another. The Greasers and Socials survive in two opposite sides of town and hold two opposite outlooks on life. The Greasers feel rejected from society, making them turn to violence as a resolution. The struggle between society and family come to play as the boys fight for their place in the community. Their vulnerability is stressed through discrimination from society, and violence is shown as a coping method.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a fictional young adult book with many conflicts covering themes such as: don’t judge a book by its cover, leave the past behind, you never know what someone’s going through, and more. It stars a group/gang called the Greasers, the main character and narrator being Ponyboy. This gang is a group of teenage boys/young adults who are on the poor side of this area. The members of the Greasers are Ponyboy, Johnny, Sodapop, Dally, Darry, Two-Bit, and Steve. There’re also the Socs which are the “rich and spoiled” kids in the book.

For example, Mr. Pirzada feels like an outsider because he is a Pakistani in America and wants to go back because he misses his family and wonders if they are ok. Boori Ma feels like an outsider because no one believes that she came from a wealthy area and life, and Bibi Haldar does not feel normal and feels like an outsider because she is sick and needs help. Occasionally, Mr. Pirzada feels that he is an outsider because of his isolation from his family and his home country, Pakistan.
