Have you ever wondered what people before you listened to? If there weren’t Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, or Adele, who would they listen to? While musicians like Harry Styles are very successful, they didn’t do it all on their own. They got a lot of influence from the 80s. The music industry in the 80s had a very large impact and influence on the music industry today. A lot of the big musicians still talked about today were thriving and most popular in the 80s. This includes Michael Jackson, Madonna, Queen, and Kate Bush. Michael Jackson was powerful in not only his voice but his actions and journey as well. He wore what was considered feminine clothing at the time. He was the first African American singer to have their music video aired on MTV, and is also one of the highest-achieving African Americans in the 1980s. As Tony Sclafani said, Michael Jackson “redefined roles of music videos and dancing in popular music.” Pop hit, “Thriller” is the highest-selling album of all time with over 100 million sold. His many successes have led to his nickname, “The King Of Pop” (Baltin). While Michael Jackson greatly influenced pop music and culture, Madonna was the queen of punk music. She is arguably the most influential fashion and music icon of the 1980s. Much of her fashion consisted of Dr. Martens, leather skirts, chains, mesh clothing, and teased hair. Much of this fashion appeared in her music videos and mainly in her video, “Lucky Star”. While she is and was an inspiration to all, her fan base and following were greatly made up of teenage girls. Today, Madonna is still talked about and still a big part of the music industry
