The book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, should not be banned from schools. Alexie’s novel is well written because it covers stereotypes, hope, and reality. Censorship has been increased from middle school to high school because in high school students are more mature and understanding. In some occasions, books can seem to be inappropriate for parents, and the teachers do not want to receive complaints from the parents. People today are more open-minded rather than close-minded. Our current society is more accepting and more willing to see other perspectives on people’s creativity and positions in life. Books that contain curse words are considered bad because of bad language or uncomfortable topics, but everyone has said curse words .“ She was concerned about me. I had been thinking about her breasts.“ ( Sherman p.127). These kinds of parts in the book may make people feel uncomfortable, but that is something normal teenage boys think about and should not be seen as inappropriate because this can be an everyday occurrence. As long as the main character can express his feelings in the book and for students to get used to reading curse words with maturity. The high schools and teachers know that students can be mature enough to hear or read the inappropriate language, but when they are so used to not being able to use them, students feel awkward when a curse word comes up in a book or movie. Some students’ reaction to this uncommon language can be giggling and teachers see it as immature. Teachers should have a syllabus of consent that shows what their children will be covering including “inappropriate topics’’, so parents can be aware what their child will learn and they will have the right to give their child permission to learn about the topic. The topic of eating disorders can make parents feel uncomfortable, but with a letter of consent, the parents will know what they will be covering in class. For example, Penelope the main character’s crush, says “Anorexics are anorexic all the time. I am only anorexic when I am throwing up”.(Sherman p. 107) Topics about eating disorders are not constantly discussed and can make someone feel uncomfortable, but everyone has their own problems and they have different ways of fixing them. For example, Junior’s dad deals with his problems by drinking instead of confronting them. People that are afraid to confront their problems, choose to get drunk, develop eating disorders, do drugs or exercise because that is
