Timothy Bechel Mr Hook English 10 22 February, 2023 In The Absolutely True Story Of A Part Time Indian there are many themes and ideas because It says and demonstrates the truth about life as an Indian in America celebrates culture, and it uses common language and slang spoken today. First in the book, the author is not directly naming or calling a person, or group of people, anything bad or discriminating against people or cultures. He is commenting and making remarks that do not discriminate or offend a race or culture with racial comments or actions. He may have been called or heard stuff like that, but he is just showing what he and others deal or have dealt with in their life. Also to show how different their life is from ours. When Junior leaves the rez, his friend Rowdy betrays him and does not like him anymore. Rowdy betrays Junior and does not like him as much anymore because he sees leaving the rez as an act of betrayal. Junior gets picked on at his new white school outside of the rez. Junior had to fight his way out of bullying and punch the “alpha”. People underestimated him and his abilities. Indians are thought out to be “stupid” or “not as smart as white kids” or other people in their school. In his defense, he is a varsity freshman basketball player, and is said to be one of the smartest kids in his grade. Showing his abilities and talents that most kids do not have in the school that he goes to. On page 54 of the book, he says, "The Indians around here are going to be angry with you.” “Shoot, I figure that my fellow tribal members are going to torture me.” Another example is on page 61 when it also says, “I knew that my best friend had become my worst enemy.” The Indians in his tribe see it as an act of betrayal for leaving the tribe and the people behind. Rowdy turned his back on him and punched him when the narrator told Rowdy he was leaving. Rowdy felt the betrayal and got furious with the narrator. It shows that people get treated badly when they leave the rez hoping for a better future. They also leave in hopes to pursue their future and find better job
