The American Dream has always symbolized hope for a better future, but most Americans take it for granted. For some it’s having fame, wealth, freedom of race, religion, or class. Other people believe it’s having just enough to be able to survive, but in the novel The Great Gatsby, the American dream for Jay Gatsby is about gaining wealth and materialistic things in order to find his own happiness. Although Gatsby was able to acquire all the wealth he wanted he wasn’t able to have Daisy all for himself.
