In Mark Edmundson’s Article “Can Music Save Your Life?” he discusses his theories on music. He goes through personal experience and later onto philosophical stances. Edmunds believes music, opens figurative doors, should inspire one to create, and above all preserves the listener. Edmundson says music should make the listener desire to create.
Music has been a valued part of my life since I was very young and has continued to grow to be a personal necessity since then. It has always served as a calming outlet and a relaxing activity. I see myself as a classical musician that has appreciation for all forms of music. From Bach to Tchaikovsky to Hazo (all of whom are classical composers), I feel the connection to their music and find that the classical music they produce says more than words and is able to tell a story with unlimited emotion. Music has a certain appeal that is wondrous and so different than any other form of communication.
The Awakening by Kate Chopin ends with the protagonist reliving old memories and eventually entering the ocean to drown herself. However, this ending does not feel like an ending for this character, instead it feels like a new beginning of awakening. My identity is wrapped up in my love of music because I have been surrounded by it since I was little. When I was a toddler, I would sit for long periods of time and watch videos of kids singing songs. As I grew older I participated in my church's children's choir and even held solos in my elementary school chorus. When I reached middle school I joined my school's middle school chorus in 7th grade as an alto and 8th grade as a soprano. The transition between 8th and 9th grade was important for me because I took up voice lesson in 8th grade and went to my first music camp the summer before 9th grade.
I began participating in band in 5th grade and throughout the years I have discovered that music is something that I truly enjoy. I originally decided to continue on with band during high school just for fun, unaware on how much of an impact it would have on my life. Through band, I have met some of my best friends and I have experienced once in a lifetime opportunities like performing at Walt Disney World, during a parade. Over the past four years I have drastically improved my musical ability and my leadership skills. Most importantly I have learned the value of a job well done.

I have always been a particularly musical person. When I was younger, I wanted to become a singer when I grew up, but upon joining the choir in elementary I realized I did not have the talent for singing that I thought I had. Continually singing off key and never sounding as good as my peers did, I decided to confine myself to singing at home where only my family could hear me. Despite this revelation that I was, in fact, a terrible singer, I still wanted to participate in some type of musical performance and decided to join the band in middle school. After trying out various different instruments, I settled on the flute and quickly fell in love.
I don’t really like listening to normal music with no instruments. When there are instruments and no words it’s like you get to add the meaning to the song. When I play my instrument I feel like I’m sending a small message and contributing to the overall message the whole band wants the audience to hear. Music means a lot to me I can’t say it’s my world yet because I have a long way to getting
I play six instruments including Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Clarinet, Mellophone, and Piano, and I sing in my Church Choir as well. I have the honor of being principal chair on Alto Saxophone in Symphonic Band, as well as a featured soloist in the 12 O’Clock Big Band. I have applied for student leadership in Marching Band next year as well. Athletics at Central Dauphin have taught me important skills of teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. I meet ambassadors from around the world, and I was able to speak with amazing musicians and performers. While in Hawaii, I snorkeled in Hanauma Bay, hiked Diamond Head volcano, and visited Pearl Harbor. I will never forget the friendships that I forged all because of music. I began as a naïve middle schooler and transformed myself into a confident performer and student. I now carry a sense of pride because I finally completed my dream.
Ever since I started playing the piano at the age of 8, I have developed a great love for the arts. As a music major, I have spent my entire undergraduate career surrounded by music, performing music and teaching music. I am currently a senior music education major at Ithaca College. I study under Gordon Stout, Professor of Percussion at Ithaca College. I serve as the President of the Percussion Arts Society of Ithaca College.
Do people ever stop and think that a certain song has changed their mood completely? One minute they were mad and the next they are sad. Or that music can help people with illnesses and disabilities. How music can affect the brain, emotions, memory and so much more. Music plays a key part in today’s society.
At a young age, I constantly wanted to express myself through music. I always found a way to incorporate music into my daily life, whether it be by blasting my favorite music, creating my own funky songs, or even having the opportunity to participate in my elementary school choir. I am in a high school marching band, where I play any piano-like instrument. My viewpoint with music has come to a simple conclusion, without it, I would not know who I am or what to do with my life.
