He then faces difficult and even deadly challenges. As a result of this experience, he changes from his ungovernable, supercilious ways as he comes to strong and sudden realizations of how wrong he was, and he learns how to be an honest and forgiving human being.

The 2012 movie Beasts of the Southern Wild, director Benh Zeitlin’s debut movie, sees 6-year-old Hushpuppy living with her father Wink in a remote village called the Bathtub. When Wink mysteriously falls ill, it seems that mother nature falls ill with him, with temperatures rising, ice caps melting, and rising waters threatening the Bathtub and its community. In one key sequence, the aftermath of the flood shows Wink and Hushpuppy searching for survivors, and eventually finding some at the local pub. Once safe from the flooding outside, Wink and Hushpuppy hunker down at the pub and reminisce about Hushpuppy’s mama. In this scene, there is a strong theme of change and loss, shown through the key symbol of hope represented by Hushpuppy’s mama.
Totem poles are a way to show who you are through symbolism. In the novel Touching Spirit Bear, Cole uses a totem pole to remind him how he needs to act everyday of his life. The author uses flashback and foreshadowing in both “Old Ben” and “Fox Hunt”. In “Old Ben” the narrator found a snake and took it home and kept it as a pet and the snake ends up dying later on in the story. In “Fox Hunt” Andy was walking home one day and this girl showed up out of nowhere and he has a dream about her that she is a fox and then one day she went to sit down and he saw her have a tail. Flashbacks are being used as well as foreshadowing in both stories.
