The Beatitudes are eight short statements spoken and taught by Jesus. These emphasize concerns with morality and how someone can obtain these moral attributes. They were also meant as a guidance to help us on our journey here on earth, while maintaining a relationship with God. Though they are examples of ancient wisdom, they apply even today. They are beneficial for anyone who is searching for meaning in life regardless of their religious affiliation as well as those who do not even have a religious belief system. If a person has a change in heart, then their emotion and mindset on the world will change also leading them to the promise of true abundant life. Jesus begins his teachings of the Beatitudes by stating the way to happiness. All eight of the Beatitudes state the same beginning phase: “Blessed are”; the word blessed is translated as “happy”, and in Greek it means spiritual well-being and prosperity of the joy of the soul. The first and third Beatitude are “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (v3) and “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (v5). These can be interpreted as a person that in a spiritual condition of submission and yearns for God in their lives because they are humble and know they cannot do anything alone without God’s authority. The second Beatitude says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (v4). Someone who morns express deep sorrow, and in this instance, it should be a deep sorrow for one’s sins. Some people say the Beatitudes are impossible to do today; they are confounding because they tell us to live our lives with hope and happiness in a dying world. One specific argument that arises between the Beatitudes is whether people that actively following Christ can be soldiers in war. How can someone be a peacemaker, show mercy and meekness in an active line of duty? If you take this Beatitude in a literal sense, you may see a contradictory statement, but if think on it in a more spiritual aspect, you gain understanding. When thinking about the situation of war think about it in the perspective of the lesser of two evils and that war are justified. As a solider, it is your purpose to render to the government and fight to bring peace to your nation, to be a peacemaker in an area filled with violence.
