In his pom entitled “Evening Hawk”, Robert Penn Warren characterizes human nature by a transition between the flight of the hawk during the day and that of the bat, or the “Evening Hawk” during the night. The hawk, as it soars in daylight, portrays how humans appear in clear light of their peers, while the bat, cruising the night sky, symbolizes what humans hide within themselves. Warren effectively expresses the meaning of this poem and its serious mood by the use of diction and imagery to appeal to the reader’s perception of sight and sound. Throughout the first part of the poem, Warren describes the journey of the hawk in the daytime to symbolize how one’s character may seem to other beings.
“Woodchucks” by Adrienne Rich, and “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” by Maxine Kumin, are both poems with a heavy focus on animals. “Woodchucks” describe its selected animal as a pest, mentioning how they steal their food and invade their property. However, in “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers,” tigers are portrayed as noble, brave, and majestic. The protagonist of each story goes through a different journey. In Rich’s story, the homeowner first seems fairly innocent, and is shown to simply find the woodchucks annoying.

Knowledge can be compared to a torch, or fire. Fire brings light and can help guide us through darkness. At the same time, fire, when not used wisely or contained, can lead to destruction. Similarly, the human species can use knowledge to further advance us, or we could let it tear us down. This is a common theme in the novels
Sitting on the edge of the stingray aquarium at Seaworld, dazing into the crystal clear water was a beautiful sight. The beaming of the heat on my back, and the humidity making my hair frizzy was overwhelming. I nervously hovered my hand over the water and poked my finger into the habitat. My ears then, caught the sound of the food machines clicking. The sound caught my brothers attention too.
