The major events in one’s life are what shape their true character and personality. Over the course of the book The Body of Christopher Creed by Carol Plum-Ucci, many characters underwent a lot of change to their emotions and views of society. A great example of this is Torey. In the book, Torey becomes more obsessive and aware of other’s feelings. Torey had a massive change in character from the start to end of the book because of how the Chris Creed mystery affected him. A major part of Torey’s character at the end of the book is his motivation to find Chris Creed. At the beginning of the story, Torey saw Ali as an old friend of his, as she was known as a promiscuous trouble maker. We later learn, however, that Ali has been going through a lot of emotional struggles, as her parents had just gone through a divorce. This emotional pain led her to make bad choices and gain a promiscuous reputation. After Torey learns of this while talking with Ali, he thinks, “I was starting to realize why Ali felt the need to find new friends. Ryan and Renee were fun, but they were kind of naive. Stuff like this didn't happen in any of our houses. I tried not to stare at the ceiling, but I had this totally helpless feeling there nothing I could do for her” (Plum-Ucci 74). This quote shows how Torey was able to step into Ali’s shoes to find out how she was feeling, even though he had not gone through what was happening to Ali. Torey would have trouble with this had he not learned how he affected Chris’s feelings. When Torey learned that he had a part in how Chris was feeling, he started to learn to see behind someone’s reputation and step into people’s shoes to understand the pain they are going through, like he did with
