When growing up in different border towns, each person's experience is different. Some border towns are violent and others are simply a wall. Because of these differences, people have an opinion about border towns. Alberto Rios is from Nogales, Arizona and wrote the poem “The Border: A Double Sonnet.” On the other hand, Ray Gonzalez is from El Paso, Taxes and wrote the poem “One El Paso, Two El Paso.” The authors' different upbringings and points of view influence each poem's word choice, point of view, and structure in the poems “One El Paso,Two El Paso” and “The Border: A Double Sonnet.”

Rios is an author and poet and was born in Nogales, Arizona. In Rios' poem, he mentions "the border" at the beginning of each sentence. By Rios mentioning "the border" at the beginning of each sentence, Rios specifies he is referring to his experience on the Nogales border. According to an interview between Cornish and Rios, titled "Arizona’s Poet Laureate Alberto Rios on What Life on "The Border" Really Means," he is describing what the border signifies to many people living in Nogales, Arizona. According to the "Visible and invisible battles on the border," it can be viewed as a line that appears to mimic the border separating Mexico and the United States. According to the author's point of view in "Visible and Invisible Battles on the Border," written by Dubrasky, those who have made it through and may never be seen again are depicted as if they, too, are dead. Even if the border was effective in some kind of way, according to Gonzales, the border appears to be a natural aspect of reality, penalizing people who attempt to break away from their homes, societies, and cultures. This may reflect the ongoing difficulties faced by immigrants who successfully cross the border into the United States and must now establish a new life while risking being thrown back across the border.
