When was the last time you read a book of fiction? Maybe not since your last time in highschool or maybe you read every day, if so I commend you. Now in days reading fiction is seen as something that only children do and is generally looked down upon, but researchers have shown that reading fiction is more than it seems and has some unforeseen benefits on the ones who read it. In the article “The Business case for reading Novels” Anne Kreamer believes that there should be a reason for people to read fiction. In that article he talks about how great literature can be, but how a less than stellar teacher can ruin that unintentionally for students. Morison shows that when we don’t look at literature the right way we may not experience it well ; but he argues that we need to see the premium in it. Morrison says ,”But great literature allows one to think and feel from within how other cultures think and feel. The greater the premium on understanding other cultures in their own terms, the more the study of literature matters.”This again explains that we need to read literature because fiction is a treasure trove rich in culture and feelings that can be advantageous to us in life. Morrison also happens to mention that when we read we can feel what is to be like another person. Morrison explains,”By identifying with a character, you learn from within what it feels like to be someone else”. The fact that reading allows this for to happen means it can improve our empathy with people because if see how other people see the world we can communicate better.
