“Who does now remember the Armenians (Adolf Hitler, 1939)?” Who does? When someone hears the word "Genocide", the words killing and death may come to mind. A genocide is defined as, Article II: “In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group as such:Killing members of the group;Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.”
In 1944, a Polish-Jewish lawyer came up with the word, “genocide.” However, even seventy-five years later, many people still debate what factors go into making a genocide. Of course, there is mass murder, mistreatment of large groups of people, and difficult life conditions. Take the Cambodian Genocide, for example. People were tortured and killed so much during this genocide that at one of the death camps, “as few as 12 managed to survive” (Pierpaoli).
Genocide is the act of mass murdering groups of people because of someone 's disliking. In other words getting rid of people or stop their existence, mostly because of their religion, ethnic, or race. One of the most atrocious ones was the Armenian Genocide(April 24,1915-1916), in which 1.5 million of the Armenian population, living in the Ottoman Empire were either deported or killed. During this time, the Turkish government had planned the genocide to get rid of the entire Armenian population in the Ottoman Empire(which was one of the largest empires to rule on the border of the Mediterranean Sea) because they feared that the Armenian community would join their enemy troops during WWI in 1915.
Anthony Pfeiffer Mr. West Sophomore English 1/21/16 Genocide in the World Today The word genocide is the combination of the Greek word "geno" (meaning tribe or race) and “caedere” (the Latin word for to kill). When used the definition of the word means the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. This word has such a profound impact is due to it affecting millions of people 's lives because they don 't have the freedom to believe in what they want, however, if they do they can and will be punished or killed by the leaders in their country. Many countries are still facing the problem of genocide because it directly relates to people 's beliefs and ideas, where they think that
Genocide happens when groups try to take out a whole population. 800,000 hutus and six million Jews died in the killing by the people that wanted to commit this massacre. Kids, adults, teens, boy or a girl died if a Tutsi or a Jew. Two great people that survived these two genocide wrote books about their experience. Paul Rusesabagina wrote An Ordinary Man and Elie Wiesel wrote Night.
What role do leaders play in genocide? Discuss with reference to the Armenian Genocide. The United Nations defines genocide as an act “committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group” (Analysis Framework). A lot of deliberate thought and calculation goes into organizing genocide and leaders play a very important role in this process.
Throughout the semester this class has presented information that wasn’t known to me, for example that there is a specific definition for the term genocide, there are deeper reasons into committing genocide, and that there are other genocides besides the Holocaust. With my new found knowledge I plan on discussing and answering two question that have been presented after completing this course, first, while studying the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, and the Rwandan Genocide, one has to notice that all three incidents take place during times of war whether from outside aggressors or internally between one another, so one must question why are genocides (these in particular) more likely to occur during wartime? The next question that must be answered deals with the first-person accounts of these acts and how the accounts reflect the events that took place? Do the recollections help explain what truly took place, are they truly accurate or do they contradict anything we’ve learned and introduce more questions than they answer. To ultimately answer the first question of why genocides tend to take place during times of war, one has to think that there is some type of advantage of committing genocide during times of war and for this question I have decided to compare two cases to help answer this question, The Holocaust and The Armenian Genocide.
A genocide is the the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation, the Holocaust and the Cambodian Genocide are examples of this. After the Holocaust, in 1945 the United Nations realized that genocides were a continuously happening. They realized they needed to prevent genocides and global conflict in general. The Holocaust began on January 30, 1933 when Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany and ended May 8, 1945 when the war officially ended.
Genocides, the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular group or nation, has affected various countries. Genocide not only brings a war but also problems like decreasing economic affairs and social problems. When genocide starts, society overlooks economic affairs like their agriculture since they focus on the war. In the case of Rwanda, once the genocide had begun many farmers fled or were killed. "All was
Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of an ethnic, racial, religious or national group that has brought many losses for human population through the whole history of the world. First cases of genocide had such reasons as territorial, competing and religious arguments. For instance, one of the first genocides is thought to be the Roman destruction of Carthage in 146 BCE that occurred due to religious reason and the competitiveness of these two superpowers. The history has seen many cases of genocide, but this social problem especially spread worldwide during the twentieth century which was even claimed to be the “century of genocide”.
The Rwandan genocide vs. the Holocaust “Genocide is an attempt to exterminate a people, not to alter their behavior.” Jack Schwartz. Genocide is mass murder, it happens in all parts of the world. A common known genocide is the Holocaust. Where a group known as the“Nazis” (lead by Hitler) murdered more than six million people (many were Jewish).
Genocide is the mass killing of people, usually for religious reasons, but now genocides happen mostly because no one can agree. An infamous example of one of the worst genocides was the killing of Bosnian-Muslims in Yugoslavia. After provinces like Slovenia and Croatia decided to secede from Serbia because of religious reasons, Serbia decided it was time to take action. After examining the political power, death rates, and the sole reason for the Yugoslavia murders, it is clear that the Serbian genocide is one of the worst in history. By looking at how the country was ran, the sheer panic seen in all of the government officials, and the amount of war and lives ruined, it is clear that the Bosnian-muslim genocide in Yugoslavia will always be
The UN Convention defines genocide as “any of the follow acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group” (Jones 13). The wordings of the definition can
The genocide was an after affect of the scramble for Africa by European countries who help no regard for the people who already lived their. In the scramble for Africa many European countries raced to make claims on land in Africa that was already lived on by natives, they mistreated the natives and killed and enslaved many of them. This was prevalent in Rwanda when the belgians imperialized the land. The belgians sent the Hutus who were the majority of the population into slavery and lead to mass deaths of their people. But they lead the land through another ethnic group the tutsis who made up about 15% of the population compared to the 85% population of Hutus.
Genocides are the mas murdering of any specific group of people and German Nazis succeeded in murdering six million jews in a short span of time before and during World War II. Not only were they able to murder six million jews they were able to dehumanize and put fear in many more through anti-semitic ways. A group of people that were living successful lives not fearing harm or believing anything to that extent could happen. For something of that magnitude to happen there had to be planning involved which is why the Wannsee Conference was held. The top Nazi officers met at this conference and discussed plans of what they should do in their future where they came up with the Final Solution.
