The decisions that people make can be influenced by the complicated idea of love. In the story, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, two young lovers, who are obviously not destined to be together, naively fall into the difficulties of love. Similarly, in the NEW YORK TIMES article, Romeo and Juliet Bosnia, by Bob Herbert, two real-life teenagers were put into a similar situation trying to navigate their way through the struggles of just trying to be happy with each other. For example, in Act III Scene II of the story, Juliet discovers from her confidant, the Nurse, that Romeo has slain her cousin, Tybalt. At first, when she finds out, she is infuriated with what Romeo has done and does not know what to do, but when the Nurse starts to criticize him, Juliet gets offended and scolds her for talking negatively about the love of her life. In the text, it states, “Blister’d be thy tongue For such a wish! He was not born to shame. Upon his brow the shame is asham’d to sit; For ‘tis a throne where honour may be crown’d Sole monarch of the universal earth. O, what a beast was I to chide at him” (III. ii . 95-100). In the text, Juliet is basically reprimanding the Nurse for telling her that Romeo is no good. This is unreasonable because the Nurse had just informed her that Romeo had killed her cousin. Two lovers who lived in Bosnia felt that they were destined to be together. Bosko Brkic was an Eastern Orthodox Serb while Admira Ismic was a Muslim. It is frowned upon in their societies to have any association with the opposing religion since they are at war. These two teenagers felt desperation to be together so they caved into the forbidden relationship which obviously led them to misfortune. In the article, it states, “Bosko and Admira decided to flee Sarajevo. To escape, they had to cross a bridge over the Miljacka River in a no man's land between the Serb and Muslim lines. Snipers from both sides overlooked the bridge” (Herbert 11). This quote exhibits how nothing was going to hold back these two teenagers from being in love, not even their own religions. Both of these teenagers were willing to die so that they could prove to everyone that they should be able to love. In this case, there are definitely factors that play into making it an uncontrollable
