The aroma of alcohol and drugs reeked throughout the entire house. The stench came from the room of a once innocent, teenage boy. Nearby that room, a formerly virtuous, teenage girl was trying on revealing miniskirts and strapless dresses, trying to attract the attention of others. Could it be that hormones played a role in the choices that these teenagers made? It has been proven from multiple scientific studies that hormones play a significant role in assisting in the erroneous choices that teenagers make. Hormones which are chemical messengers have a greater impact on teens rather than adults due to puberty occurring at this time. “During the initial stages of love, a teen's body is flooded with testosterone and estrogen. The first stage of love, when testosterone and estrogen levels rise, prompts a teen to start looking for a potential mate” (Coleman). These hormones can make a person decide and discern that they have found their true love and from this, they will make decisions about their future together. The effect hormones have on love is evident in Romeo and Juliet. After knowing Romeo for only a couple hours Juliet states,”Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, by one that I’ll procure to come to thee, where and what time thou wilt perform the rite; and all my fortunes at thy foot I’ll lay and follow thee my lord throughout the world” (II, II, 144-148). Their sex hormones have caused them to strive and decide that they have found love after only a short period of time. During this short period of time, both of them have confessed their true feeling of affection for each other, and Juliet has agreed to follow Romeo everywhere he goes. Hormones have affected the choice of love for both teenagers and ultimately led to the choice of getting married without thinking about the decision or the consequences first. The selection of finding someone to love and acting upon it is caused by hormones in teenage years.
