ETHNOCENTRISM Ethnocentrism is an idea of considering one’s own culture superior to others in terms of language, culture, values and traditions. Highly ethnocentric groups often perceive their culture as more logical, positive and natural than others. The degree of ethnocentrism will be affected by our interpersonal communications and also will develop hostility between culturally different groups. For example Hitler in Germany believed that Jews and other communities are inferior to Nazis and don’t have any right to live. So he killed thousands of Jews in the concentration camps, just because he thought their race was not pure. Ethnocentrism in several circumstances can lead to horrible consequences and prejudices. Ethnocentrism can make people feel that other religious communities are bad or inferior to them and can often lead to terrorist attacks or hate crimes. Ethnocentrism might sound familiar to ethnic pride but there is always a thin line of difference between the two. If people of two different communities do not keep a biased opinion about other’s religion then ethnocentrism cannot lead to negative consequences. Nowadays consumer ethnocentrism is also growing as they prefer imported foreign goods and people think they are unpatriotic as it will decline our GDP. Ethnocentrism has been seen as a prevalent contributor to nationalism, both in past and present. Ethnocentrism often leads to dominance over other groups and adverse potential outcomes.
