The myth, “Loo-Wit, The Fire-Keeper” states, “The weather was always pleasant. There was food for everyone and room for all the people. Despite this, though, two brothers began to quarrel over the land. Each wanted to control it. It reached a point where each brother gathered together a group of men to support his claim. Soon it appeared there would be war” (Bruchac 480). This quote proves why a theme of the myth, “Loo-Wit, The Fire-Keeper” is that one must examine the consequences before making an important decision. In the quote, it is saying that two brothers are quarreling over land and who should control it. Even though the Creator gave everyone the things that they need and want, including peace, the two brothers disturbed the peace and went to war. The two brothers did not think of the consequences of fighting over land. The result of this was that the Creator got angry at the two brothers and Loo-wit was upset and angry as well. So, Creator took away fire for a bit and Loo-wit turned the two brothers into mountains forever. The myth, “Loo-Wit, The Fire-Keeper” also states, “When the Creator saw the fighting he became angry. He broke down the Great Stone Bridge. He took each of the two chiefs and changed them into mountains” (Bruchac 482). This quote relates back to the theme because it shows what the consequences of not listening to the Creator are. It reveals how the brother fought before thinking about what would happen to them and what the consequences would be. As a result of this, Creator turned the two brothers into two mountains forever. Creators did this because of their greedy and ungrateful actions. Lastly, the myth, “Loo-Wit, The Fire-Keeper” states, “Loo-Wit was heartbroken over the pain caused by her beauty. She no longer wanted to be a beautiful young woman. She could no longer find peace as a human being. The
