In Cuba I was a German shepherd and The Distant Past built with their own characters a real sophisticated portraits, both of them offered no hope or happy endings. They are a form of a travel back in the soul of the past, holding a message to the readers, in which their aim is to understand, the integration of past and future ,which can hold out a political and historical dimensions. Starting with In Cuba I was a German shepherd; it is a story that was published in 1990, when bill Clinton was a president, and in Cuba there was a revolution. This story holds deep inside, an adventure of four men, where its events, are of the present day, and the narrator handles time. It begins when four men sitting in a park, where on every Christmas it is decorated, surrounded with so much traffic, whereas the four men play domino and shift their memories from past to present time, introducing them in jokes, that are a condition of being exiled, jokes are related to the story structure and theme, and Maximo is one of the men who prepares jokes, that helps him move his nostalgic feelings back and front to keep up his dignity! The jokes are usually about Castro in Cuba, these jokes travel Maximo and the other men to their minor culture, running away from what made them miserable and what they are today and of feeling victimized. Maximo and his past life shows us how a person can be damaged silently by time, and how he tries to connect with his flourished past “like when he met his wife Rosa in a special night, and then the family recollection, when his two daughters were small”. Thereafter we can feel how the writer tends to overcome the sense of the cultural encounter ,when she combined the memories to stories that where fabricated into jokes, where a unique technique shows how the past catches up with the present ,
