Essay On Electromagnetic Radiation

2326 Words10 Pages

HYPOTHESIS
If mobile phones emit electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic radiation and heat, then I do not believe that it can cause brain damage because the electromagnetic waves and radiation are simply not strong enough to cause brain damage.

MOBILE PHONES AND ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION
According to the UN, with the estimated 7 billion people on the planet, over 6 billion of these people have access to mobile phones, meaning that if mobile phones do pose a threat to the human brain, most people are in danger. In 2011, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified mobile phone radiation as Group 2B – possibly carcinogenic. That means that there "could be some risk" of carcinogenicity, so additional research into the long-term, …show more content…

These radio waves emitted are typically below a watt. The rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body is measured by the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), and its maximum levels for modern handsets have been set by governmental regulating agencies in many countries.

THERMAL EFFECTS
The effects of electromagnetic radiation on biological systems depend both on the radiation 's power and frequency. For electromagnetic of visible frequencies or lower (i.e., radio, microwave, infrared), the damage done to cells and other materials is determined mainly by power and caused primarily by heating effects from the combined energy transfer of many photons.
An effect of microwave radiation is dielectric heating, which is the process of heating a dielectric material such as living tissue. With a person using a cell phone, the majority of the heating effect will at the surface of the head, making the temperature increase but only by a fraction of a degree. The temperature increase here is less than the temperature increase than the head will experience while exposed to direct sunlight. The brain’s blood circulation can decrease the temperature by increasing local blood flow. However, the cornea of the eye cannot decrease this temperature, leaving it exposed to heat
