A FORSAKEN DEATH
“Ni****! That’s what you are. You just another ni**** on the street to me!” (Wilson, 1986, p.87). Talking to his very own son, Troy, husband and father of three boys, does not do enough for his children. In Wilson’s (1986) play Fences, Troy is the antagonist father who does anything that he can to ensure that his children will be successful; however, he does quite the opposite. He is a disappointment to his family, and this is proven when he passes away, leaving no one to mourn his death. The failed father and son relationship that both Troy and Cory display, provides a great example of real world fatherhood neglect, within that of an African American household.

Many abused and or neglected by their fathers, are forced to grow up without a positive role model in their life. Bono provided an example of how messy an African Americans household could have been; however, instead of describing an abusive household, much like Troy’s, he instead describes an empty house. “I ain’t never had a chance. My daddy came on through … but I ain’t never knew him to see him … or what he had on his mind or where he went. Just moving through” (Wilson, 1986, p.50). A majority of African American children do not have fathers in their life. Much like Bono, even if a child does have a father in their life, they are rarely ever seen. (Add Detail) Wilson properly displays the inadequacy of these fathers, and their ability to support their family, especially young African American fathers. Even if the father is prevalent in a child’s life, that does not mean that they are a good role model to the children. (Father is overused) While Cory attempted to protect his mother from his fathers abuse, Troy continued on with his baseball analogies, and yelled at Cory, having informed him that he had finally reached strike two
