In the book, Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli uses descriptive details, and actions to develop the main character, Maniac Magee. Jerry Spinelli developed Maniac to seem to be a very helpful person in the book. When maniac was living with the beales and Jerry Spinelli made Maniac do this action, “He carried out the trash…” This action showed that Maniac was a helpful person because he was helping Mrs. beale around the house. The next action that Mr. Spinelli gave maniac that showed Maniac was a helpful person was, “ mowed the grass, cleaned up his own spills…”
Anyone with young children in their lives could easily become fired up over these words. There is proof that she had something to do with her daughter’s murder, and for her to be so careless about the fact that there is evidence proving this. The most disturbing line from Anthony was that she sleeps pretty good at night. Any mother that has gone through losing a child, or anyone who has ever lost a close loved one would question how she sleeps pretty good at night. As this information plays to our emotions we quickly begin to take the information more seriously.

Where we’re from, who we know, and how our mental makeup is, is very important in our lives. It can be the deciding factor between life in prison and a life dedicated to giving back to others. In The Other Wes Moore, The lives of two young men are examined through three distinct lenses, how the role our environment, social capital (How we get ahead by helping each other) and how our mindset can dictate who we become later on in life. Both of these young men grew up in roughly the same environment, the ghettos of Baltimore, Maryland and the Bronx, New York, respectively.
Book Report “Maniac Magee” is a graphic novel written by the prestigious author, Jerry Spinelli, and it was first published in the year 1990. It has also won many awards, including the John Newbery Medal. In life, there are many possible roads that a person can take. Some may be smooth and lined with gold bricks and success, and some may be bumpy and paved with dirt and frustration. The things that a person does in their lifetime that leads to the end of the road comes along with many accomplishments and even more failure along the way. There are some things that can prevent these defeating things from happening such as a good supportive family and having role models in life. As exemplified by the memoir The Other Wes Moore, the author suggests that regardless of environment, lives can end up entirely divergent due to family support, choices and consequences.
In Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli, Amanda Beale, is sympathetic. One way, Jerry Spinelli, developed the trait sympathetic when she was letting Maniac talk to her on her way to school (page 11).The reason is that she let him talk to her even she ended up late, and she let him walk to school with her. Another way Amanda was shown to be sympathetic was when she let Maniac have a book to read (page 13). The next reason is that she let him borrow it and she knew he would give it back, but she didn’t want to give him her house number. Lastly, the author showed that Amanda was sympathetic when Amanda gave up her room, so Maniac could sleep somewhere else other than the couch.
When World War 1 broke out in 1914, the United States attempted to remain neutral and was a strong advocate the neutral rights of nations. The U.S. liked to believe that the war was strictly a European conflict, but they would soon understand that they were inadvertently part of the war effort and entering war was inevitable. The U.S. was never truly neutral in the first place, but in fact supporting Europe the whole time. The reasons for breaking neutrality were more political and economic. It was the United States best interest to abandon its neutrality, and choose to go to war on the side of the allies for the future protection of American assets and welfare.
In the story Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli (the author) had created a character, Amanda. I know, from the story that Amanda is high handed because of her actions. First of all, I understand how Amanda is high handed where when she was yelling at Maniac. He wanted to leave and run because someone said something that hurt Maniac inside. She was being very high handed because she told him that what a random guy said was not true and she wanted him to stay.
The upbringing of a child contains many factors, many of which correlate to where a child grows up. The people, culture, and experiences of someone’s childhood are the greatest determining factor for what kind of person they will become. So how does the nature and nurture of one’s upbringing impact the decisions that they make, and their life in general? Author Wes Moore explores this question in his memoir, The Other Wes Moore, as it relates to two lives in particular. Moore main purpose in this book is to explore the overarching impact that a collection of expectations and decisions, not always one’s own, can have on someone’s life.
