In the book, Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli uses descriptive details, and actions to develop the main character, Maniac Magee. Jerry Spinelli developed Maniac to seem to be a very helpful person in the book. When maniac was living with the beales and Jerry Spinelli made Maniac do this action, “He carried out the trash…” This action showed that Maniac was a helpful person because he was helping Mrs. beale around the house. The next action that Mr. Spinelli gave maniac that showed Maniac was a helpful person was, “ mowed the grass, cleaned up his own spills…”

In the game of life, sometimes people are dealt a deck of cards that start off great but end up awful. Before anyone realizes it the first part of their life is over. Then there comes a choice “what next?” “Lou Holtz once said, ‘How you response to the challenge in the second half will determine what you become after the game, whether you are a winner or a loser.’” In the book Bleachers, the main character Neely Crenshaw is dealt a deck of cards much like that. After Neely takes one hit after another, he does not know what to do until he finds himself back in his hometown for his old coach’s funeral.

In Kate Grenville’s historical novel ‘The Lieutenant’ the protagonist, Daniel Rooke is entangled between his obligation to the British Empire and his own beliefs. During his time with the marines, Rooke quickly found out that the Military services demanded complete loyalty and obedience. This loyalty is tested when Rooke is caught between the conflict between his people and the aboriginals. However it is only through bonding with the Lieutenant Gardiner and the Cadigal people that, Rooke is able to see that fulfilling one’s personal beliefs is more important than those that are imposed by others.
Charlie by, Lee Maracle is about a young Indian boy who goes to a catholic school. Charlie dreams about going outside and exploring but the school will punish him if he does. One a day a group of kids including Charlie sneak out to go to one of their families houses. When they get their Charlie leaves to go to his family’s cabin. Unfortunately his long journey is cut short by frost bite and he dies of hypothermia.
