Cannabis Induced Schizophrenia
Marijuana has been known to have negative effects on mental health. In the documentary film produced by Beyond Entertainment “ The Downside Of High: The Link Between Marijuana And Schizophrenia”, they take their viewers through a case study of a former marijuana user named Tyler. The film documents Tyler and his symptoms as well as show the viewers the increase in THC (Delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol) usage and the increase in schizophrenia. The use of Marijuana affects the learning ability of the user even after weeks of consumption. This leaves the user in a distraught\ dream-like state. Elyn Saks, Fellow schizophrenic and Professor of law and psychology at USC said “ The schizophrenic mind is not so much split as shattered. I like to say schizophrenia is like a waking nightmare.”( “A tale of mental illness -- from the inside”) In reality, it is not that schizophrenia is a mind divided in two, but it is a damaged mind. From Trying it out to becoming a full-blown addict. Tyler’s mother, Debbie, began noticing her son’s change in behavior. Tyler’s addiction worsened over a span of 6 months to the point that even he noticed. Tyler expressed that he would sit in pain and have the voices surround him during and after his high. This showed the viewer how cannabis started triggering the chemicals in the brain to start mimicking the symptoms of Schizophrenia. Not long after, Tyler had a situation, that led him to be diagnosed with schizophrenia. Now knowing his diagnosis, both, Tyler and many other addicts that suffer from schizophrenia wonder if their addiction to cannabis could have caused
