The Frank family, the Van Pels, and Mr. Dussel all lived in the secret annex. The secret annex was on the top floor of a warehouse and office building in Amsterdam, Holland. There are three rooms on the top floor in the attic space. The rooms are sparsely furnished with a few chairs, cots, and a table or two. The windows have makeshift blackout curtains. The secret annex is hidden behind a bookcase attached to a door, so no one would find them. There is only a skylight in the sloping ceiling. They live in harsh conditions, did many daily evening and afternoon activities, and they had many restrictions and freedoms. The Franks, Van Pels, and Mr. Dussel all lived in harsh conditions. The secret annex was very tight, and congested. It wasn’t very clean or sanitary. On page 281 it states “the rooms are dusty, curtains in rages. “ They didn’t have very many clothes to wear because when they left they could only take whatever they could wear. Also, they didn’t get to wash their clothes, so they were dirty. On page 286 it states “ they took off garment after garment” Given these points, they did not live in good conditions. One thing they couldn’t do was go outside because people would see them. If they got caught, they would be in danger. They couldn’t use the water between certain times of the day because the water would run down through the pipelines which causes the workers to be suspicious. On page 286, it states “ The pipes go down through the workrooms. It would be heard. “ Also, Anne had to leave her pet behind when they left because they could only take things that would fit in their bags. Anne says “ I have one… a darling little cat. But they made me leave her behind. “ They couldn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to their school
