Patients suffering from mental illness usually have normal I.Q and can be experienced by individuals of all levels of intellectual ability. A mental health condition disrupts the thoughts, behavior and emotions of an individual and may be temporary or experienced in recurring cycles or episodes.
Mental illnesses have a high prevalence amongst the United States population. Each year, tens of millions of individuals suffer and are affected by mental illnesses (National Institute of Mental Health, 1). These illnesses range from anxiety disorder, eating disorders, major depression, personality disorder, and many more. These two models are working in conjunction with each other. Many people disregard the medical model and it is understandable, however different disabilities have different needs therefore the medical model can’t just be disregarded. The medical model needs to be involved in a person with disability’s life for example; if someone was to get depression, you would need anti-depressants as well as counselling. These sources of help are given by the medical model. However if someone was a wheelchair user and they could not get around the shopping centre, this is societies fault because the shopping centre is not adapted to accommodate everyone, whereas the medical model would try “fix” the individual rather than the shopping centre.
The Biopsychosocial Model The biopsychosocial model of health care allows medical practice to be understood completely in terms of biological, psychological and social factors. The model suggests that every illness can be explained and treated by an interaction between these three factors. The model was proposed by George L. Engel, the Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester, where he challenged the previously prevailing medical model, called the biomedical model, and argued for the introduction of a biopsychosocial model.
