“Take pride in your pain; you are stronger than those who have none,“ -Lois Lowry. The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is a science fiction novel that shows the struggles Jonas, who is a young boy, goes through while living in a community without suffering, hunger, war, color, music, and love. During Jonas’s twelfth ceremony, he was selected to be the new Receiver of Memory, and must receive memories from The Giver. The memories that Jonas receives help him learn the truth about his family and community, He comes to conclusion that he can no longer live like this, and there must be a change. When Jonas was given the memories, it helped him gain more knowledge about himself, the past, and his community. The text states, “It was a game he had often played with the other children, a good game of good guys and bad guys, a harmless pastime that used up their contained energy and ended only when they all lay in freakish postures on the ground. He had never recognized it before as a game of war” (133). In this text evidence, the memories helped Jonas learn that the game the kids in his society are playing is known as a game of war. This helped Jonas learn that the people in his community are not aware of the memories and what the memories contain because they have never felt them before. Another example of the memories giving unlimited amounts of knowledge is, “They have never known pain, he thought. The realization made him feel desperately lonely and he rubbed his throbbing leg” (110). As well as in the first citation, in the second citation Jonas also realizes that his family has never felt the knowledge or feelings that memories give. One more example is, “Suddenlyhe perceived the word for it: (85). In this example, the memory of unshine is teaching Jonas about the past and what they do not have any more. Memories do not only give you knowledge, they also give you many
