One of the themes of The Giver is the importance of human connection. This is one of the themes of the story for many reasons. First, the citizens of the Community know nothing about love or family. All they know is their assigned “family unit.” Because of this, they have no emotional connection to each other. This is shown through Jonas’ parents lack of connection and care to their children. Second, when Jonas meets Gabriel and The Giver, he begins to realize that love is absent from his life. This is shown when he tells Gabriel that he loves him, or when Jonas asks the Giver to be his grandparent. Finally, the story focuses on interdependence. This is one of the themes of the book for several reasons. First, everyone in the community is the same. Their lives are all very routine, and they are all encouraged to believe that their only purpose in life is to help the community. Differences, such as Jonas’s eye color, are not mentioned so as to avoid rudeness. In fact, the community is so focused on order and serving the community, that it’s members begin to forget the value of life. Children who are not the same as everyone else, and elderly people who have served their purpose are killed. The community is just striving to maintain order and sameness. Second, when Jonas receives The Giver's memories and wisdom, he learns the truth about his community. Jonas realizes that the community’s ideals of sameness make a perfect society, but love, emotion, and individuality are lost in the quest for perfection. Finally, the central plot of the book is centered on Jonas and his journey from being a non-questioning part of the community to his eventual distrust of the society. The entire story is based on Jonas becoming an individual.
