In The Giver, Gabe symbolizes love and perseverance in a dystopian world. This is shown in the story when Jonas and Gabe were traveling to Elsewhere: “If he had stayed, he would have starved in other ways...for Gabriel there would have been no life at all” (218). Jonas begins to love Gabe, because of the memory The Giver gave him, which showed him a small cabin with family and happiness. So instead of letting Gabe get released, he took Gabe with him to elsewhere. This means Jonas felt emotions that nobody else had in his community. Jonas felt love and true happiness. He also takes Gabe with him because Gabe would have gone through a traumatic situation, of which being killed.
Imagery
The Giver describes the community as a world with no emotions, no choice, and no diversity: “...it was considered rude to call attention to things that were unsettling or different about individuals.” (26) The reason that this is an important image is because the Elders long ago switched to sameness, which left them with no color, no music, and no love. The Elders did not want anything bad to happen in the community, so when they took away wickedness, they took away diversity and emotions as well.
