There are many simularities and differences in the book and movie " The
Books in the same genre always have key similarities; that’s why they’re in the same genre. But, they also have their differences that make them make unique. This holds true for the books The Giver and Uglies. They both deal with the idea of a utopian society; perfection. There are several comparisons between The Giver and Uglies such as the rules they have, the adventures that the main characters have, the love story between the characters, and the main characters themselves.
One similarity is, the main characters are both trying to change something from their city or their community. In The Giver, Jonas is trying to reach the boundary of memory to replenish people with memories of both happy and very devastating things. As Jonas gains more and more wisdom from the memories he starts to realize the flaws of society, leading him to start pushing back. Ender 's Game and The Giver are very similar. The protagonists are both different from everyone else in the society. Ender is sent to Battle School while Jonas it sent to The Giver. In both books, the protagonists are both learning information that could possibly save the the world. Jonas is learning about feeling, colors, and the past.
The giver is a good book and a good movie. Though like most people I prefer the book. So that I don 't sound bias I will consider both the book and movie. The first thing I strongly disagree with the movie is lacks of backstory it gave us.
The Giver is about a young boy named Jonas who lives in a community without color, emotion, war, differences, pain, etc. There is only the community. That is until he gets his assignment where he sees and feels things that he never knew existed. One of the major script differences in the film is that we learn right away that Jonas’ community doesn’t see color. Another major script difference is that the ending in the film is different from the ending in the book.
Both Luath and Jonas are alike in a few ways. For example, Luath and Jonas are very devoted to their jobs. Luath is a hunting dog so he does what he knows to do when he hears a gun. “The sound of a shot and the splash of a duck had had the same effect on the labrador as a trumpet call to an old war horse, and drew him in irresistibly.” Every day Jonas has to do his job.
Life comes with challenges that change people and their way of thinking. The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry shows us that Jonas changes slowly as the story progresses. Jonas changes by becoming loving when he starts to receive memories, becomes courageous, and selfless when he is on his journey to Elsewhere. Jonas is showing lots of signs of changes ever since he started to train as the new Receiver. First Jonas shows signs of change when he starts to feel love for Fiona and Asher (170).
In the book Fiona was a caretaker of the old and in the movie she is a nurturer and Asher is the instructor of three’s not a drone pilot. The last difference between the book and the movie is how they transport the memories in the movie. In the movie they just hold each other’s wrists and then Jonas has the memory, but in the book Jonas has to lay down on the bed on his stomach with his shirt off. Then the Giver puts his hands
Based on my criteria, I come to the conclusion that the movie version of The Giver is superior to the book in these two ways. The main reason I believe the movie is better than the book is because it made me feel more in the perspective of Jonas, instead of a bystander. Without freedom, choice ,color , or individuality, life just would be meaningless and
The last distinction I found was the age of Cindy Lu. In the book, the say that Cindy Lu was no more than two. But in the movie, she looks older than two. Cindy Lu has a bigger role in the movie than the book. I found many differences in the book and movie.
The last extreme change is that we have emotions, feelings and we can see color, Jonas’s society is so much about equality that they don 't want anyone to be different or they fear that the people will have the power to chose what they want to do. Today 's society and Jonas’s have some similarities. Such as, in both children are given comfort objects to help them through rough times. Well just like in The Giver all children go to school in our country too.
Jonas and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi are similar in some ways. They both enter an environment that they know nothing about and face a conflict that is bigger than them physically and mentally. Both of these characters show courage and perseverance while trying to solve their problem which end up to their personality and they society to change. In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas shows perseverance when working through the troubles of becoming the new receiver of memories.
Also The Giver gave the gift of wisdom to Jonas. He did because in this dystopian society, Jonas was gifted to learn and be passed down memories of different parts of all the memory of receivers. While others had no memory and everyone has samenesss. So Jonas was able to learn new things and use them in the present. With family, friends, and survival.
