Staley English I 12 January 2018 Dystopian Appeal to Teenagers Dystopian literature has become an ever increasing presence in today's teenage world. However, one might query as to why adolescents have lost interest in books such as Narnia and Twilight which are works of fantasy fiction. A dystopian society is the opposite of a utopia, it’s a place where negative social forces drive the plot. This shift of interests is a peculiar phenomenon as these two genres are almost completely opposite. Some of the common examples of dystopian literature include the novel, Anthem, written by Ayn Rand and the film, The Giver, directed by Phillip Noyce. Since equality embraced individuality the rewards of self satisfaction and freedom came. This is what most teenagers crave and is why Anthem may be so interesting to them. The most prominent film in the world of teenagers is The Giver simply because this film encourages individual thinking, teenagers may not realize it, but one of the main reasons they watch the dystopian society genre is because it's promotes uniqueness. In the film, there are examples of individual thinking throughout it, for The Giver some of the individual thinkers were Jonas, the Giver and Fiona and one of the most influential thoughts in the film was Fiona at the release ceremony. Fiona while at the release ceremony said “I felt things, I know there is something more, something missing from our lives, I have felt things, and they were warm and nice, and they were beautiful”(Noise Giver film ). This quote implies that the that people were meant to feel and understand, Fiona had individual thoughts, though Fiona didn't understand them, they felt pleasant and nice, this kind of control on society engages teens because they put themselves in the place of the character and feel …show more content…

Another reason this quote is especially attractive to the teenage mind because its dramatic and shows good values, and this might be reason why it is such a popular film. Individual thinking is a sought after trait in teens because it important to be different and, individuality is important because it make people different. Comparing the novel Anthem to the film The Giver, most can conclude that the main point in common is the fact that both the main characters and others around them were controlled in many ways, thoughts, family and future.
