The differences between the female roles in the play, ¨The Glass Menagerie¨ by Tennessee Williams, is a significant observation. Even though Amanda and Laura are mother and daughter they are very different. They both have different mindsets, and different personalities. Amanda is a mentally strong women, and Laura is as fragile as glass. This makes you question If Amanda Wingfield, wasn't so demanding, over protecting or overpowering. Would Laura be any less fragile than she was? Or would Laura be more like her mother?

She was young but not too young. Laura isn't normal, “A childhood illness has left her crippled, one leg slightly shorter than the other.” (Williams, 179) Laura “denies the fact that she can achieve things like all other women are doing in her generation.” (Bui) because of this illness. Between Amanda and Tom, her life wasn't her own. With an overpowering, overprotective mother and a brother that was miserable because he wasn't living the life he wanted to be living, he loved his sister but he loved adventure more.
