The Government in Legend also uses fear to corrupt the mindsets of the citizens. Like the pigs in Animal Farm, the government in Legend uses violence towards those who disobey or go against the government in any way to maintain power and scare the other citizens into obeying them. When June organizes the capture of Day in his house, Day hides while the guards hold the rest of his family hostage, hoping to lure Day out so they can capture him. When Day does not turn himself in like the government wants him to, “The captain lifts his gun and points it at my [Day’s] mother. Then he shoots her in the head” (157). The government is willing to shoot and kill an innocent woman in order to both get revenge on and capture a criminal. Their tactic works, …show more content…

This proves how scared many citizens - such as Day’s brother - are of what would happen should someone fight the government in any way; they know that the government would not hesitate to hurt someone, even a young child, like Day was in his dream. This shows that the government’s tactics of frightening citizens into obeying them has been effective to some degree. Unlike in Animal Farm - where Clover and Benjamin know that the pigs are corrupt however do not do anything about it - Day and June, who know the government (in Legend) is corrupt, are willing to fight back. Day, having been raised in the slums and treated unfairly by the government all of his life, has always been against the government, which the reader learns is why he committed the kind of crimes he did. June, however, becomes inclined to stop the government after learning this. She goes to the Patriots - a group of rebels - for help to plan and carry out Day’s rescue mission. She convinces the Patriots to help her by telling them that “I [June] want justice. And I want to free the boy [Day] who didn’t kill my brother [Metias]”(266). Since June is in a good position in the government, she is able to get away with her plan to rebell against the government. The government in Legend relies on fear as a big factor in manipulating and corrupting the citizens of the society into obeying them. However, since the society is bigger than the one in Animal Farm, there are more people who are willing to fight for justice, meaning that they could band together to stand a chance against the government. The stories told in Animal Farm and Legend prove that absolute power corrupts absolutely. In both societies, there are corrupt and powerful leaders, who in turn corrupt the citizens’ memories so that they will be less likely to recognize how unjust the new society is, and who also utilize violence and threats to keep rebels at bay in fear of what would happen to them if they were to disobey the government. These factors
