In this chapter Nick Carraway explains that there is constantly people going to Gatsby’s house on the weekends. He explains that he was invited to one of Gatsby’s “little parties”. He was given the invitation by a “chauffeur in a uniform”. Carraway explains how elaborate his parties usually are. When he arrived Carraway explained how he felt out of place because he didn’t know anyone. He ran into Jordan Baker and stuck with her most of the evening. He also met Jordan’s friend Lucille. Lucille tells a story about one of the other parties she had attended at Gatsby’s before. She also said that she heard that Gatsby had killed a man once and that he was a German spy during the war. They walked into a giant library in Gatsby’s home and meet a man with “enormous owl-eyed spectacles.” He explained that he had apparently been drunk for a week and a half and figured that sitting in the library would sober him up. They went back outside and Nick explained that people were dancing. Nick and Jordan sat at a table with a man they didn’t know and he had said to Nick that he had looked familiar to him. He then asked if he had been in the Third Division during the war and they both were. The man at the table explained that he was Gatsby. Jordan then explains to Nick that Gatsby is claimed to be an Oxford man. Jordan also explains that she likes large parties better than small parties because they are smaller and more intimate.
