Following most successful novels, movies are made based on the authors work. The Great Gatsby has seen two movies soar a top the box office within 40 years, once in 1974, and once recently in 2013. The storyline for both movies follow the original novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nick, the narrator follows the lives of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. Throughout the novel, all Gatsby wants is to be with his only love, Daisy. The only problem is that Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan. Gatsby would do anything to bring Daisy into his life, such as using his riches, lying, and altering his identity. The comparison of the two movies includes the similarities and differences of the cast, production, audience appeal, and my personal preference of the movies. The cast of a movie is extremely important, as it should be identical to the characters in its novel. It is important to have this resemblance in order to make the movie more believable and easier for the viewers to quickly point out which cast member is playing which character. In addition, it’s also important that the cast members are well-suited for their roles and that their quality of performance is at a high level. The 2013 movie had an outstanding cast that had actors that suited their roles to almost complete perfection. You must find the correct camera angles, spend months on editing, and have the right music and sound effects at the correct times. These areas are key to having a successful run at the box office. Moreover, the second comparison to the two movies is the production and how different camera angles, pacing, clothing and costumes, all affect how the two films can be similar or different in their own ways and can be critically compared. Firstly, the camera angles between the two movies are very similar because they are both a majority of medium and a high focus of a scene. The medium shots and high focus of both movies help the scenes to include every character and focus on a specific person or object if needed. In addition, the lighting in both movies was also similar. They both used appropriate lighting to emphasize big scenes, which were accurately depicted. In the 1974 film, meaningless crossfades were shown, some of them were fast, some slow, some dark, and for majority of the time the fade had nothing to do with the previous scene. In the 2013 film, the editing was far more superior, but it was due to the advance in technology that wasn’t available for the making of the 1974 film. The pacing of the two movies is in a way different, but during certain scenes they can be similar and have the same pace.
