Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Gatsby is seen to go through what seems to be a life in a matter of months. He makes a new friend and sparks a relationship he thought he had lost. To any person looking in and just seeing the action that Gatsby takes and the way he looks he seems to be living the “American Dream” though this is far from the truth. Though Gatsby is portrayed as living the American Dream he still has much inner turmoil making him the embodiment of the American Dream rather than the idea of it. To many people, the American Dream has everything you want with life, but all people that are seen to live the “American Dream” have much more going on in their lives and inside of them than meets the eye. One of these is when Gatsby is said to have “hesitated” almost making something seem sad or more important than it actually was. Along with that Gatsby was carrying many souvenirs with him that to the average person would seem unnecessary. Gatsby is also said to have been “pocketing his souvenirs with satisfaction” making it look like he thinks he just said or made a perfect lie. As the book goes on it is proven that everything that Gatsby said in that car ride was in fact a lie when Nick later in the book talks about how he learned the real truth of Gatsby’s past having been from a poor family and then leaving and living with a rich sailer for several years. Gatsby delivered this story to Nick at a very specific time when he felt that he was losing Nick due to his many lies about his past: He told me all this very much later, but I’ve put it down here with the idea of exploding those first wild rumors about his antecedents, which weren’t even faintly true. Moreover he told it to me at a time of confusion, when I had reached the point of believing everything and nothing about him. Tom is one of those people when Fitzgerald describes Tom’s comment as being said “boisterously” which is being said in a rough or rude manner. There are several reasons that Tom could have said it like this either because he truly believes he is above Gatsby or because he is intimidated by him. Another aspect of the physical American Dream is having your dream partner and throughout the book, this is what Gatsby has his sight set on. He threw all of his parties and bought his massive mansion all in order to attract the attention of the woman that he wanted. When he finally got her close Nick makes some very close observations those
