Effects of Success What makes your life feel successful? Is it a money order? Is it a happiness? Is it a fad? Is it family and friends? Is it a good idea? Is it a privilege? Is it a Ethics? Or is it intelligence? There are so many things that can make a person successful, personally and economically. Although success can be whatever you want it to be or what you see it as, success in America is one of the biggest struggles people face. However, for some, success isn’t a struggle and it’s something that can come through generations or just come naturally. Before Daisy married Tom, she was with Gatsby and at the time, Gatsby didn’t have much money. Years later, Gatsby was considered rich, but Daisy was already married to a wealthy man. Gatsby had money, and he had everything he could possibly want except the girl, who he almost had. During the book, Gatsby tried to woo Daisy, but in the end she chose Tom. Tom Buchanan’s wealth could be seen as old money and more classy, whereas Gatsby’s money was new money. In chapter 7, Tom says, “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife” (Fitzgerald 100). Tom felt superior to Gatsby because of his money and who he was, which made him feel successful. Even though Gatsby was rich, he had just recently earned his wealth, which is considered the “new money”. The lifestyles between West Egg and East Egg are different when it comes to class and wealth, and it appears that Daisy prefers the East Egg wealth rather than West Egg.
