Millions of people from entrepreneurs to business aficionados have attempted to define leadership in books, at conferences, through history, and by experience. Yet all have failed to clearly describe what makes a real leader until now. Randy Sims, the Executive Director of Worldview Academy, authored a book back in 2000 entitled The Greatest Among You, where he carefully unpacks the true meaning of leadership for young students. Coming from a Christian background and years of ministry experience, Randy Sims understands how authorities should also act as servants. As a result, not only does he accurately define servant leadership, but he also discusses its substructure and its pillars. These two qualities have appeared to disappear from culture over the course of the past few decades. Even though meekness rhymes with weakness, they do not mean the same thing. In reality, “Weakness is powerlessness, but meekness is best defined as ‘controlled power’” (Greatest 66). Consequently, gentleness and humility go in tandem with this characteristic, and leaders must learn how to control their authority. Otherwise, it will become arbitrary and morph into tyranny (Greatest 68, 70). Stories about politicians succumbing to bribery and participating in scandals abound because these elected officials divorce personal responsibility from civic duty, even though they belong together. Randy Sims defines integrity as “the quality or condition of being whole or undivided” (Servant). In construction terminology, workers use this word to refer to the soundness of a building’s internal framework, and from a Christian perspective it refers to how people act by themselves. Expand on
