All people have equal economic, social and cultural rights…” – ‘The Greens’ Political Party. Social Justice is acting in an effort to achieve an equal and fair society. This concept is seen both in the theoretical and practical aspects of both Catholicism and Buddhism and is evidenced throughout both religions.
Catholicism is fundamentally based on the teachings of the Holy Catholic Bible. The areas on which one should focus on, and how one should interpret these within the bible are heavily debated, but regardless of that, Social Justice concepts are evident throughout the entirety of the religious text. One aspect of The Bible often seen as fundamental are the Gospels. Buddhism is based on the teachings of the Buddha, known as the Dharma. The Dharma teaches that life involves suffering, which is caused by desire, and you can end this by following the “Noble Eightfold Path.” Firstly, the concept that desire causes suffering is in direct relation to Social Justice, as desire is one step from greed, and greed causes inequality. “Greed: inordinate or rapacious desire, especially for food or wealth” – Macquarie Dictionary. Furthermore, the concept of ending suffering by following the “Noble Eightfold Path” is also socially just, as it is calling for people to live their lives in a noble and moral way. While Social Justice calls for large-scale action and these concepts are more fundamental, and based on the essence of a person, they form the basis around which a socially just person is
