The involvement in a community lightens up warmth within oneself. Angie Thomas’s novel, The Hate U Give embodies an ideal model to what a neighbourhood must be. A positive community aids Maverick Carter in developing as well as bettering himself for the sake of his loved ones. In The Hate U Give the feel of community and belonging allows for growth; Maverick Carter breaks the cycle of crime previously constructed by his father, leaves a life and home he knew, and comes to terms with Starr’s additional father figure, leading him to progress as a father as well as provide security to his family. Ubconditeanlly, Starr will have Carlos to lean on when times get rough and that makes Maverick uncomfortable; as if he is not doing a good job raising his daughter. Maverick accuses Carlos of not caring for Starr; “‘Does he mean the same niece I took care of while he was locked up? Huh? The one I took to her first day of school because he took a charge for his so-called boy? The one I held when she cried for her daddy?’” (323). During Maverick’s time in prison, Carlos takes care of Lisa and the kids. He holds Starr when she misses her father and is there for all her firsts. Maverick begins to question his role as a father and if he is really there for Starr during her hardships. Carlos will not take accusation from Maverick because Starr means the world to him. In any case, Maverick does not show up to events at Carlos’s house or anywhere Carlos is. Starr voiced her thoughts about Maverick and Carlos’s relationship: “I’m surprised daddy knows how to gethere. He never comes out here with us. Ne-ver. Holidays, birthdays, none of that” (223). Maverick and Carlos do not get along and so Maverick does not attend or visit Carlos at his house. As a family they do not spend time together when it comes to birthdays and holidays.
