Joseph Campbell’s, The Hero’s Journey, appears in the foundation of modern hero tales, such as drama, storytelling, myth, and religious rituals. The first step in The Hero’s Journey is the Departure phase, it’s where the hero has an unusual birth or early childhood and is forced to leave their everyday life to face the challenges that await them. Next, is the initiation phase, it’s where the real challenges and trials occur. The hero has a mentor or guide who gives them a special weapon or advice so that when the hero faces the darkest part, the temptation to give up or quit, they will transform and achieve their goal. Lastly, the return phase is when the hero returns home and is able to recognize the experiences the hero had in the other world.
In Illuminae, the main character Kady flees her planet after it is invaded in the year 2575 with her ex-boyfriend Ezra and boards a refugee ship, where she encounters many obstacles. These include a war between two rival megacorporations, a conscious and sometimes deceitful AI, and biological warfare in the form of a plague manufactured by BeiTech Industries, the enemy megacorporation. The authors, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, use Kady’s Hero’s Journey to develop the plot and show Kady’s growth. In particular, they use Crossing the Threshold when Kady and Ezra escape their planet and Tests, Allies, and Enemies when they meet and overcome the challenges mentioned above. One day Richard was sauntering down the road when he got this call from this person that was threatening his family 's safety on to the peace of the community in which he lives. It could be as treacherous as a gunshot. It ultimately distrusts the comfort of Richard safety and presents a challenge that must be undertaken. Although Richard may be eager to accept the quest, Richard will have fears that need overcoming. Second thoughts or even deeper, personal doubts as to whether he 's up for the challenge or not.
What is a hero? What must one do to qualify for the honor of having such a title? A man named Joseph Campbell wrote a book called The Hero with a Thousand Faces, with the idea that there is a road on which most heroes in most stories travel on their way to becoming a hero. This is called The Hero’s Journey. From leaving the comfort of The Shire to helping defeat a dragon and returning home with the treasure Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of these heroes.

The interactions that one has with their siblings can affect and shape their personalities as an individual. In Lightfinder, the Cardinal siblings, Aisling and Eric, have been reared apart, as Eric runs away from his family members with a mysterious friend of his, Cor. As described by Maria Zappone, Aisling is an “unconventional hero [that] takes on a hero’s journey of her own” (Zappone 1). Aisling acquires this as a part of her personality, and becomes an individual that is caring, determined, and motivated, as she seeks out to find her brother Eric.. As a result of a distant relationship with his sister, Eric relies on Cor, who influences and shapes the characteristics of Eric’s personality.

Both are about man's relationship with God(s), including man’s struggle with temptation, and the serpent as a symbol.

In order for a hero to complete the cycle of the hero's journey, the hero must follow Joseph Campbell's crucial stages of the ordinary world all the way to the return with elixir. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, the main protagonist, joins a group of dwarves to recover their lost, forgotten gold from Smaug the dragon. Joseph Campbell’s A Hero with a Thousand Faces, he states that many legendary heros follow a pattern in their adventures. Matthew Winkler has his own ideas of the heroic quest pattern, stating the hero's follow a pattern of eleven stages. Both The Hobbit and the heroic journey have similar elements with departure, initiation and then return.

We are surrounded by heroes everyday. Regardless of what characteristics you think make a hero or who might be a hero, you will find heroes in television shows as well as the film industry. If you actually think about heroes in a movie or television show you will notice it is a lot more common than we might think.

A hero's journey is a pattern of narrative identities that appears in many dramas, storytellings, myths, and psychological development. The journey consist of twelve different steps and in the story Beowulf we read about the magnificent and rough journey that Beowulf and this men accomplish. Many people question if Beowulf is considered a hero and if what he did was good. The journey that he embarked on, leads me to believe that Beowulf is a hero and always will be. The first step in the hero's journey is called the “call to adventure” this is when something is disturbed from external pressure of from inner conflict.
