Movies based on books usually differ from the actual novel to entertain the audience more or to build a more interesting plot. The Hobbit is a great exception to talk about, as scenes from the 3 movies differ greatly from ones in the novel. The Hobbit is written by J.R.R. Tolkien, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is directed by Peter Jackson. The novel tells the story of a homely hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who is recruited to be a burglar for a party of 13 dwarves accompanied by the Grand Wizard, Gandalf the Grey. The party goes on a quest to the Lonely Mountains of Erebor so the dwarves are able to reclaim the mountain, treasure, and Arkenstone from a giant, fire-breathing dragon named Smaug, but Bilbo and the dwarves are unaware of the many treacheries of the journey. …show more content…

Between the novel and movie, a main difference is in the scene “Roast Mutton”; how the trolls are introduced to the story and how Bilbo and the dwarves are saved, and both of Jackson’s changes prove to be effective to the story. In chapter 2, “Roast Mutton”, the men arrive at a forest and camp in for the night. Gandalf leaves to look ahead on their journey, and a strange sound is heard not too distant from their destination. Bilbo finds out that they’re trolls harboring the mountains, and he decides to gain some experience as a burglar by snatching a wallet from one of the trolls, in which he is caught by them, forcing the dwarves to come rescue
