The tale of Bilbo Baggins is one that has been around since 1937. When a book has been around for a time like that, there is bound to be a controversy pertaining to it. The problem the book has is whether or not it should be banned in high schools. I believe that J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, The Hobbit, should not be banned in high schools because it displays the creativity that an author should be allowed to have when writing fictional works. Tolkien’s novel, The Hobbit, should not be banned in high schools because it displays the creativity that an author should be allowed to have when writing fictional works. The themes of friendship and striving against adversity were lost among those looking for witchcraft and "satanic themes," and this has caused Tolkien’s novel to decrease in both familiarity and popularity. On the contrary to this “satanic” belief, Gandalf, a great wizard, can symbolize God – both utilize the weak and give them the opportunity to grow and develop in what one is meant to become. Gandalf’s disappearances can best be related to the saying the teacher is always the quietest during the test; therefore, without solely relying on Gandalf/God, the individual has to stand up and develop on his or her own. The protestors against this book are seeing only in black and white not the in-depth layers that literature has to offer to the reader. In the world today, people still smoke and there are even more regulations and awareness about the effects of tobacco on the body and on the effects on those around the smoker. I personally think all forms of smoking is disgusting, but that does not mean he or she is any less of the person I am. This wonderful novel features an important lesson, people of different races can work together.
