When the stress of fear takes over, a spark of hope is needed to keep on going. Katniss shows how hope is stronger than fear. In the book, Katniss realizes what it feels like to lose a loved one in front of her eyes, and how it feels to see them die. When Katniss makes a trusting friend named Rue who was only 12 years old, she felt attached to her because she reminded her so much of her little sister, Prim who was far away from Katniss as she was in the arena (Collins 200). Instead, she threatened to commit suicide with poison berries and told Peeta to do the same because she knew that the Gamemakers won’t allow both of them to die (Collins 344). The fear of Peeta dying made Katniss overwhelmed so she decided to be smart and came up with a plan. She knew there had to be a victor so she decided to eat the berries with Peeta, as stated before and had hope that the Gamemakers would do something to let both of them win, and they did. They announced both Katniss and Peeta as the winners of the hunger games. The spark of hope that the Gamemakers would change their decisions made Katniss and Peeta both win the hunger games. If Katniss didn’t have hope that the Gamemakers would change their mind, one of them would’ve been dead.
