The Hunger Games is an annual event made by the Capitol to keep districts in control and entertain the Capitol. Panem is an appropriate name for the country in “The Hunger Games” because it relates to the Romans and how they ran their empire. The phrase “bread and circuses” applies to both the Capitol citizens and the district’s citizens. For capitol citizens, they give them mostly freedom, riches and, most importantly, entertainment. They give them food and a fun show that they could place bets on. The text states, “When they televise the replay of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as an easy target.” This shows that while people are being chosen to compete to their death, it’s still recorded for everyone to see. It adds drama to the reapings, which is what the Capitol wants. Genuinely, people can see when things are not right or when someone is getting treated poorly.
