In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the idea that an incident can completely change the course of events is relevant and is shown throughout the text. The reaping is an incident that changes the course of events for the novel. The reaping is where tributes (one boy and one girl) from each of the 13 districts are selected to compete and play in the survival game Hunger Games for the enjoyment and entertainment of the capitol and people watching. This is where the incident impacts the course of events changing the outcome of how things played out like a chain reaction. With the capital themselves realising the pair's value as entertainment, Katniss continuing her stoic cold demeanour only brings more attention to her setting her apart from others as she isn't anything like the usual compliant tribute. Though Katniss and Peeta's stand out debut catches the attention of the audience, it doesn't stop them from being underestimated by the other tributes as district 12 is still the poorer coal district who only have 2 victors of all Hunger Games history. As they aren’t predicted to do well or go very far through the games this comes to being an advantage to them as they aren’t a primary target for the stronger tributes with Peeta at some point temporarily teaming up with them directly affecting the outcome of who wins. Eventually as the games progresses, Katniss allies with 12 year old Rue from district 11 seeing similarities between Rue and her own sister Prim she becomes protective of her so when Rue dies this only fuels Katniss’ hatred for the capitol more. She sings to Rue as she dies taking advantage of the fact that the capitol will have to televise Rue's death. Covering her body with flowers honouring her death Katniss’ determination to win and return back to her family strengthens. During this time separated from one another
