Historians have focused on the land war of the American Civil War in understanding how and why the North won the war, with the naval aspect of the war playing a supporting role. What has not been covered is how the role of the United States navy influenced the outcome of the American Civil War through not only through military means but also economical means. It is through the lenses of economics and military strategy that help us understand how the American naval strategies and technology modified to influence the end of the American Civil War through economic starvation of the Confederacy.

Jonathan Edwards’s sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and Anne Bradstreet’s “Upon the Burning of Our House” seem at first glance quite similar to one another regarding context, however, after taking a closer look, it becomes apparent that there are some substantial differences. These differences cannot be understood without the knowledge of cultural context concerning the Puritan belief system and their lifestyle. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” was written with the sole purpose of scaring and intimidating the people that purtinans believed to be sinners. Edwards’s work contributed to a movement called “The Great Awakening”. It’s objective was to make the so-called ‘sinners’ aware of their wrongdoings and compel them to repent.

I am hoping the next book is them finally getting together, but it might be wishing thinking. Crossing my fingers though. Still an enjoyable read, can’t wait to read the next one.
Puritanism was a movement that arose towards the end of the 16th century. It was a direct result of the split of the Catholic Church. The Anglicans became the dominant Protestant religion in England and disapproved of the Puritan beliefs. To escape the religious persecution that followed, they escaped to the New World. (Religion of the American Republic) Puritans saw God as an omniscient and omnipotent being.
Taylor uses pathos, which means appealing of the text to the emotions or the interests of the audience. He begins his speech by suggesting that education should be more educational and teachers should motivate their students more. He addresses to the horrific emotion to the audience by appealing that “Our teenage-suicide rate is the highest in the world-- and suicidal kids are rich kids for the most part, not poor”. He uses these statements in order to emphasize the sadness of “teenage-suicide,” which then achieves Taylor way of persuading the audience by listening the problems. The problem that’s being surrounded by the school that causes these problems.
For example, Puritans in New England sought to recover the original, pure and simple church of Jesus Christ and his apostles. In a “Reformed Church” individual souls could nurture a more direct relationship with God…the Puritans instead urged every believer to seek God by reading the Bible. Apparently, Puritans sought to a kind of individual connection to God by promote believers read Bible by themselves, and this emphasizes the importance of individuals in Puritans’ mind. Puritans encouraged people to discover and contemplate their own relationships to God.
He continues this metaphor by showing how God makes them into dedicated Puritans. Taylor used metaphors and personification in these writings. Taylor’s use of figurative language consisted more of personification and similes. In “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, Edwards used personification: “there is Hell’s wide gaping mouth open” (87). Edwards uses personification to show God scary and unmerciful.
