The are many different cultures around the world that have many different beliefs and religions. The Igbos are a very unique culture with many different beliefs. As a sociologist I have been studying the Igbo tribe for 3 weeks. Many wives, male dominance, chiefs and elders, robes, and female wrestling are all examples of the Igbos uniqueness and that is just the start.
The Igbo rites of passage has evolved a lot since the British invaded them. Women were respected way more before the invasion. One example of this is the marriage process .The old process of marrying a young Igbo woman is very long. It rarely takes less than a year. Centralized systems have a chief or king at the apex of a complex and well-ordered political government. Non Centralized systems are more democratic, where councils of elders representing each of the families in a community, meet to make decisions about the plans of life. Finally there are many people that do not have any political authority beyond the family. There are chiefs, councils and women associations that all of says in the decisions . Men have the big say in the society and have all the power over women. The Igbos are very religious. These polytheistic people worship many gods. They believe that there are three levels of spiritual beings: the highest level is the supreme god, or “Chukwu.” Underneath Chukwu are not as powerful gods, called “Umuagbara”, and under those are the “Ndi Ichie,” the spirits of dead people. The Igbos also believe in reincarnation. They see death as a brief phase between life and the spirit world. When someone dies, he/she starts a new life in the spirit world. After a time in the spirit world, a dead person would be reborn as a new person. Since the Igbos believe that everything in life is controlled by higher powers, there are also oracles in a village that attempt to predict the future.
The Igbos have many hobbies and games they spend a lot of time with. Men and women both wrestle but only men play soccer. Although women learn soccer in school they do not play it. Women hobbies are crafting,
